Beautiful, unique, majestic, grand and wild, the most famous and most expensive, rocking nightclubs, wild and remote scenery, it has it all. When we think of South Dalmatia, we mean
Dubrovnik and its surroundings.
Dubrovnik is the most famous Croatian town, and one of the most beautiful and exceptional towns in the world. Like many coastal settlements in Croatia,
Dubrovnik goes back to the times of ancient Greece, where a group of Greek settlers lived there about 400 years BC. However, it owes its fame and fortune to the skill, diplomacy and hard work of the people who lived there in the middle ages and renaissance, who were great sea merchants, entrepreneurs and above all, good governors. During these turbulent centuries the Dubrovnik elite determined to secure freedom and independence of its people, built huge defensive city walls and defended the city at all costs. It is the first place in the world where the authorities established quarantene for travellers returning from plague infested places. To this present day Dubrovnik is a symbol of liberty for all Croatian people, and has always remained free.
Southern Dalmatia encompasses the stretch of land between the
Peljesac Peninsula to the west and the Montenegro border to the east. In between there are many delightful small places and beaches which are worth staying at and exploring. These are
Orebic,
Ston,
Mali Ston, Slano, Trsteno,
Zaton,
Milni and
Cavtat to select a few. The islands of
Korcula,
Mljet and the Elaphites are also part of South Dalmatia. If you want a vacation full of night life and clubbing, or crammed with excellent shows and classical music, museums, galleries,
Dubrovnik is the place. Equally, if you want to get away from it all and just relax swimming, walking, dozing in the sun and tasting the delectable healthy Mediterranean food and wine, there is a lot of that in the places just outside Dubrovnik and on the islands. South of Dubrovnik is the area called
Konavle, where beautiful villas and beaches nestle among pine and citrus trees and hidden restaurants provide splendid grilled fish and meat local style. West of Dubrovnik, gorgeous villages of
Zaton Mali (little) and
Zaton Veliki (large) are very relaxing, and within a short drive to
Dubrovnik. Tresteno,
Ston and Prapratno beach.
