Korcula town and Lumbarda travel guide
Birth place of Marco Polo, Korcula town is a must see place in Croatia. Nearby Lumbarda with sandy beaches is a great family destination.
Korcula Town, considered to be the birth place of Marco Polo, is a beautifully preserved mediaeval town dating from the 13th Century. The town is fortified and positioned on a small elevated peninsula providing a commanding position over the strait between the island and the mainland. Today Korcula's narrow alleyways and town squares provide the setting for bars, restaurants, shops and galleries. There are many excellent restaurants and classy boutique hotels and a cocktail bar in one of the circular towers that form a part of the ancient fortifications. One of the most picturesque and important historic town in Croatia. Well worth a day trip.
Lumbarda is a small, picturesque fishing village of about 1000 inhabitants, located on the eastern Korcula a short distance from Korcula town. Lumbarda, a village of pretty cottages and villas, sandy beaches, vineyards and olive groves, a sheltered harbour and small marina, restaurants, shops and cafes. Just out of town but still within walking distance is Plaza Prizina (Prizina beach) a gorgeous sandy beach in a wide bay. There are beach bars and a bistro on the beach. With an abundance of sandy beaches Lumbarda is a great location for families with young children. Lumbarda is a very relaxing and peaceful place, but there are plenty of shops, coffee bars and 14 restaurants, something for everyone's taste. Fishing is famous, and fresh fish and shellfish first class, prepared simply, the local way. The notable and strictly locally made white wine is called Grk and it is very delicious.
Buses and ferries: Buses from Lumbarda to the town of Korcula go regularly. From the mainland town of
Orebic it is just a 15 minute ferry ride to the harbour right below the walls of Korcula town. The car ferry docks further up the coats between Korcula and Lumbarda. A day trip to the fabulous

Peljesac peninsula.
