Top 5 activities in the Plitvice lakes national park

Forests, lakes, waterfalls and bubbling streams all make up one of Croatia’s top sights, the gorgeous Plitvice Lakes National Park. Explore the area via a network of wooden walkways and bridges and get the low-down here on the region’s best adrenaline-pumping outdoor activities.

Hiking

Of the various hiking trails through the park, the Medvedak hiking trail is perhaps the best. Step on and off the trail at different points but leave plenty of time to appreciate the extraordinary views of the Lakes. The trail is characterised by three peaks – Oŝtri Medvedak, Tupi Medvedak and Turčić – which all top 800m and are carpeted with old beech forests and home to animals such as wolves and brown bears.

Cycling

Explore Croatia’s largest national park on two wheels, cycling on traffic free roads through beech and pine forests, over rolling hills and past traditional villages. Visit Huck Finn for more information on one day trips.

White water rafting

Take to the water on the Korana River, one of Croatia’s top white water rafting spots and host to the increasingly popular RastRaft event. The 10km long rafting excursion passes through rapids, travertine barriers and canyons, past abandoned watermills and across more than 30 waterfalls. See Mirjana-Rastoke for more information and bookings.

Nordic walking

Travel along marked walking trails that range from one to ten kilometres.

Horse riding

Explore the area on horseback on a one-day excursion along the Korana river, with a visit to the Barac caves, a riverside picnic and cooling off with a river dip. Visit Ranch Jelov Klanac for more information.

Other local activities include fishing, archery, quad biking, paintballing and hunting. These can all be organised through Aktivni Odmor.
