Small, herb scented island, offering special home produced honey, quiet sheltered coves, old cottages, simple life, accessible from Split.The small and beautiful island of Solta does not usually come top of the list of "top places to visit". It is just 9 miles from Split and you can see it basking in sunshine from harbour cafes in Split. For those who like original, authentic places which have not been "done up", but have villages full of old limestone houses with blue and green shutters, reminiscent of Italy and the South of France, but without the crowds, this is the place to go to. Life is incredibly low key, and the locals produce excellent red wine, top quality virgin olive oil, and best of all their world-famous therapeutic organic honey. You will have a healthy and relaxing holiday. The island is hilly, with cliffs and deep bays. Lovely beaches and sheltered coves are irresistible for swimming.

The pretty town of Maslinica on the west of the island is surrounded by a pine forest crowned by an 18th-century castle-turned-luxury-hotel, and peeks out over an archipelago of seven islets. It has most magnificent sunsets. A great place to stay in a villa is Necujam, which has flat rocks and pebble beaches, and even a summer disco. Stomorska is the largest and most developed village, centred around a small boat harbour. The population of 250 doubles in the summer the main thing to do is to enjoy a meal or a cocktail in one of the restaurants or cafés lining the port. Up a steep hill lies Grohote, an alluring stone village that is the largest settlement on the island and its administrative centre. A network of stone alleys and hidden courtyards weaves around a parish church in a tableau of medieval, Mediterranean charm. There are also more services in Grohote including a market, pharmacy, tourist office and post office. Someone called Solta "a millionaire's playground without the millionaires (The Independent). That perhaps is going a bit too far, but when you get there, you will agree that Solta offers those precious things that money cannot buy.

Getting there. It is easy to get to from Split. The catamaran takes 30 minutes, a car ferry 60 minutes, and a private speedboat 15 minutes. Once there, you can explore by local buses, which wait for the ferry.
